Please arrive 20 minutes before the audition to register. There will be forms that must be filled out and this will take some time before the dancer begins the audition.

Students ages 4 to 6 will have a $150.00 non-refundable participation fee.

Students ages 7 to 8 will have a $200.00 non-refundable participation fee.

Students ages 9 & Up will have a $250.00 non-refundable participation fee.

This fee helps offset the costume rental-purchase fees and production costs that include: stage manager, lighting director, audio, tech crew, theater rental charge, studio’s rehearsals, program, etc. all which ensure a quality production and amazing opportunity for your child to participate.  All fees will be due prior to first rehearsal, which is Saturday Sept 9th.

Why is an audition necessary?

An audition is used to determine the proper role for a dancer, not to eliminate dancers. All dancers that audition are cast in our Nutcracker production, and each dancer is guaranteed a minimum of two roles. Roles are based on the dancer’s ability, which we will determine during the audition. 

Is the audition open to the public?

Yes, we are holding open auditions this year and dancers from any studio are welcome to participate. What a beautiful way to build our community! Children from different towns, different studios, and with varying levels of proficiency will come together in one place and share in this magical production. The Nutcracker will be an unforgettable experience for your child.

What if my child currently dances at a different studio?

Our audition is open to all students, those currently enrolled at Alma Dance School and non-Alma Dance School students alike. All students, ages 4 and up, that are not enrolled at Alma Dance School are required to sign up for one ballet class at our school for two sessions. These sessions will run from Aug. 21st through Dec. 17th. Proper level placement will be determined for all students to ensure that they succeed.

When will Rehearsals begin?

Ages 9 and Up: Saturday September 9th.

Ages 4-8: Saturday September 23rd. 

What is the rehearsal commitment?

Rehearsals for group pieces will take place on Saturdays from 12:30-6:30pm, depending on the number of roles assigned to each dancer. Additional rehearsals ONLY for soloists or principal roles will be held on Thursdays anytime from 4:30-9:00pm.

For ages 8 and up there will also be rehearsals on Sunday, Sept. 24th from 12:30-6:00pm, Sunday, Oct. 22nd from 12:30-6:00pm, Sunday, Nov. 12th from 12:30-6:00pm and Sunday Dec 10th from 12:30-6:00pm. Time will vary depending on the role assigned to each dancer.

What if my child is not available for all rehearsals and Performances?

Dancers who are not available for all rehearsals and performance dates will not be considered for participation in the performance.

How long will the rehearsals be for dancers 4-7 years old on Saturdays?

Dancers 4-7 years old who are selected to dance in two different pieces will usually have two hours of rehearsal (12:30-3:00pm) on Saturdays with a 15-minute break in between, so that they can have a snack. Dancers ages 4-7 will not have rehearsals on Sunday, Sept. 24th, Sunday, Oct. 22nd, Sunday, Nov. 12th or Sunday Dec 10th. 

How do I sign up my child for the required class? 

We will evaluated your child during the audition to determine level placement and give you a few options for the required class. We will assist you in finding the perfect class for your student and will help you with enrollment.

When and where are the performances?

The performances will be at Elgin Community College

Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive Elgin, IL 60123

They will be on Saturday, December 16th at 7:00pm & Sunday, December 17th at 2:00pm.

When do rehearsals at the theater start?

Rehearsals at the theater begin on Tuesday, December 12th through Friday, December 15th. Rehearsals at the theater will also be MANDATORY, as follows: Tuesday, Dec. 12th from 4:00-9:30pm, Wednesday, Dec. 13th from 4:00-9:30pm, Thursday, Dec. 14th from 4:00-9:30pm and Friday, Dec. 15th from 4:00-9:30pm. We will always try to release our youngest dancers by/or before 7:30pm. Tuesday's and Wednesday’s rehearsals will be split up into the two Nutcracker acts. Thursday's and Friday’s rehearsals will be full dress rehearsals.

Are rehearsals mandatory?

Yes, all rehearsals are mandatory. It is very difficult for students to catch up after they have missed a rehearsal, and absences can also cause confusion and frustration for others involved in the production. We are very cognizant of the time demands placed upon our young people and the lives of their families. Therefore we do our best to be efficient when we schedule rehearsals. 

May I withdraw my child from Nutcracker once the cast list is published?

Creating a cast for Nutcracker takes a large amount of time, detail and effort. We work hard to ensure that students receive equal opportunities at our school. Each dancer that steps through our doors is important to us, and we want to help each dancer reach his or her personal best. However, it is also difficult to recast students and reconstruct the best possible cast if a student withdraws from the show. We respectfully request that families do not audition for the Nutcracker if they are uncertain about whether they can fulfill this commitment.
